New research indicates a small implant may help restore limited spinal cord function. An electrical stimulator was implanted in patients with paralysis just below the spinal lesion. In three cases, individuals were able to produce volitional movements such as supine leg lifts, standing, and in once case, taking steps. The University of Louiville's Kentucy Spinal Cord Injury Research Center scientists are looking forward to more improvements in this treatment model. The rehabilitation community including physical and occupational therapists, will also be anxiously awaiting further improvements and reasearch.
